Brad Scott has been unable to deliver any assurances regarding the future of Jarrad Waite.
The veteran North Melbourne forward is out of contract at the end of this season and has previously spoken about playing on in 2018.
But his chances of entering a 16th AFL season hinge on whether or not the Kangaroos, who have cleaned out some experienced players in recent years, offer him another one-year deal.
Quizzed on Sportsday whether or not the 34-year-old will be on North’s list next season, re-signed Roos coach Scott replied: “Unfortunately we can’t give Waitey a guarantee.
“We can’t give him any information one way or the other at the moment.
“What we have done is kept the lines of communication open for the past six months.
”He’s been exceptional in understanding the club’s situation. He’s obviously hopeful to play on but there’s a lot to play out before we can make a final call.”
Speaking further of the former Carlton star, Scott added: “I love coaching him.
“My only regret is that I didn’t get a hold of him when he was 18.
“I would have loved to coach him throughout his career.”
