Melbourne Football Operations Manager Josh Mahoney has said Jack Watts’ performance has led to him being put on the trade table.

Mahoney said the club expected him to be a better player than he currently is.

“He should be a much better player than he’s played so far, we think he’s got a lot of improvement left in him and if that’s at Melbourne Football Club, that’s great, if it’s at another club then it’s good luck to him as well,” Mahoney told NAB Trade Radio.

“We’ve been very clear this is about performance and there was some talk it might be about money, but it’s definitely not about money, it’s about performance and our expectations on a nine year, 150 game player.”

Mahoney said Watts was encouraged to inquire with other clubs, but they haven’t heard back from any clubs just yet.

“We still haven’t heard from any other clubs on if they’re interested at all so that’s where it’s at and we’ll figure it all out over the next few weeks,” Mahoney said.

However, if a trade can’t be reached, Mahoney said the club is more than happy for Watts to remain at the club.

“The player has to agree to a trade deal so it’s definitely in Jack Watts’ hands and he’s going around speaking to other clubs and at the moment there’s no indication that he wants to leave,” Mahoney said.

Watts spoke to the media yesterday and said he was shocked at being told to seek out another club.

I’m still getting my head around it,” Watts said.

“I’ve been at the club for nine years. I love the club and love the boys.

“I see a really strong future for the Demons and it would be disappointing to miss out on that.”

Mahoney said it was great to hear the former number one draft pick talking so positively about the club.

“To hear Jack speaking so passionately about the club was terrific and he’s a great person who’s been here for a long period of time, but this is not about Jack Watts the individual, it’s about our expectations as a footy club,” Mahoney said.

Port Adelaide and Sydney have been linked to Watts.
