Collingwood great Tony Shaw believes the club should have moved on one of their small forwards in the trade period.

Discussing the current injury woes at the Magpies on Sportsday, former premiership captain Shaw suggested that he would have traded either Jamie Elliott or Alex Fasolo if he were in charge.

Both players are struggling with fitness issues at the moment – Fasolo with a shoulder and Elliott with an ankle – further compounded by skipper Scott Pendlebury’s finger and the fact midfielder Levi Greenwood is to undergo surgery and will be sidelined until the end of January.

“To me, Jamie Elliott is a star, but just cannot get on the track,” said Shaw.

“Fasolo…I thought one of them should have gone this year.

“I would have traded one of them because I thought this might be the last chance to get something (for them).

“Both are injury prone so I would’ve gone with one. It might have been Alex just to give him a fresh start somewhere else.”

Elliott kicked 34 goals from 17 matches in 2017 after recovering from a pre-season ankle injury while Fasolo kicked a career-high 29 goals from his 19 matches. He underwent shoulder surgery last week.
