Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd expects improvement to come from the Bombers midfield in 2018.

The Dons are strong at both ends of the ground, with the likes of Joe Daniher, Cale Hooker and Orazio Fantasia in the forward line, and Michael Hurley and Brendon Goddard in defence.

Lloyd says the midfield needs to lift this season, which he thinks will happen.

“As a midfield group, Essendon players don’t work as hard as other midfield groups do,” he told Sportsday.

“I think that they have ran forward a lot there hasn’t been enough onus on each other, they haven’t been hard enough on each other as a playing group and coaching group to coach that out of them.

“I think that’s where you’ll see a change this year at Essendon.”

The key Essendon midfielders are Zach Merrett, Dyson Heppell and David Zaharakis, however this year they would like to see the likes of Jake Stringer, Devon Smith, Darcy Parish and Andy McGrath all step in and make an impact.
