Malcolm Blight fears Hawthorn may struggle to return to the heights of their recent successes.
After winning the 2013, 2014 and 2015 premierships and finishing third in 2016, the Hawks missed the finals last year prompting critics to suggest that 2018 could be another uphill battle.
Comparing them to the three-peat Brisbane Lions of 2001, 2002 and 2003, Blight has concerns that things may never be the same for Hawthorn.
“Hawthorn’s the hardest team to rate,” said Blight on Sportsday SA.
“They won three premierships in a row, so did Brisbane. I’ve likened them to Brisbane from the early 2000s.
“The following year after the (three) premierships, the Hawks won 17 and Brisbane 16 – very similar.
“The fifth year – two years after – 10.5 wins for the Hawks, Brisbane 10.
“The mystery is the year after. Brisbane won 7, never to return to the finals…”
