AFL chief responds to Daisy Pearce’s AFLW concern

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan has responded to Daisy Pearce’s rant about the league’s handling of the AFLW fixture.

Melbourne star Pearce labelled AFLW a “gimmicky tournament” this morning on SEN Breakfast, in the wake of a Herald Sun report that stated the upcoming AFLW season will see each club play just six home-and-away games, despite the league expanding.

However, it was a claim McLachlan quickly watered down.

“No decision’s been made,” he told 3AW about the fixture.

“There’s a discussion about the format for AFLW next year.

“We’re making decisions with a 30-year view, not in year three.

“There is no bigger priority for us in AFL head office than AFLW and women’s football.

“The World Cup goes for four weeks. I don’t think anyone’s calling that Mickey Mouse.

“In an ideal world Daisy’s saying everyone plays each other once and I understand that.”

The AFLW’s competition committee meets for the first time next week.

At least Andrew Demetreo knew what he was talking about. Gil had better understand how long the World Cup actually took to run 2 and a half years
