Why Buddy looms as the big question over Sydney versus GWS

The Sydney versus GWS Elimination Final orbits around Swans forward Lance Franklin, according to Garry Lyon and Tim Watson.

Franklin is expected to play in Saturday’s clash, but after missing the final home-and-away game, some doubt remains over his health.

“The biggest question for Sydney is whether or not Buddy is going to be fit enough to play,” Watson told SEN Breakfast.

“There is no player in the final series that means more to a side than Buddy Franklin means to the Sydney Swans.

“I think they’re good but they’re not great without Buddy.

“If Buddy doesn’t play, you got to wonder whether or not they’re going to be able to produce enough goals.”

Franklin booted five goals in Sydney’s Round 22 victory over the Giants, but key defender Phil Davis succumbed to injury in that contest, opening the door for Franklin’s bag.

This makes the GWS co-captain a vital element to Saturday’s clash, according to Lyon.

“The most important player in the finals series for this weekend is Phil Davis,” he said.

“Phil Davis beats Buddy, GWS win, or is that too simplistic?”

Watson also believes the Giants slew of potential returnees, such as Toby Greene, Brett Deledio, Ryan Griffen, Matt de Boer and Aidan Corr, creates a problem for the match committee.

SEN Breakfast with Garry Lyon and Tim Watson can be heard Monday-Friday 6-9am, and you can subscribe to the podcast here.

“GWS have a massive concern themselves and that is they’ve got about six blokes that can come back into that side but they can’t play the six this weekend,” Watson said.

“They’ve got a massive question they need to answer at selection this week.”

The Swans and Giants clash at 4:40pm AEST at the SCG on Saturday.
