Three-time All-Australian Nick Dal Santo believes Hawthorn must roll the dice on Grant Birchall for Friday night’s do-or-die Semi-Final against Melbourne at the MCG.
Birchall’s 2018 campaign has been ruined by injury, failing to play a single game this season due to a knee injury.
The four-time premiership defender suffered a setback in his attempts to return for the Hawks’ Qualifying Final against Richmond, but Dal Santo says if Birchall is within 90 per cent fit, they must name him for the Demons clash.
“If (Grant) Birchall is around the mark, he plays,” Dal Santo told SEN Afternoons.
“It’s crazy, he has been out for so long, but I’m going to reference the Jordan Lewis factor from last weekend.
“The composure, the understanding and the calmness.
“When everything else was going hectically around him, and I know the Dees played really well as a team, but I see Birchall playing that similar role, particularly across the half-back flank.
“If he’s within 90 percent I would bring him back in.”
The 30-year-old has featured in just five of Hawthorn’s last 44 games.
