The AFL will introduce a mid-season rookie draft in 2019, according to The Age.
This newly proposed draft system will allow players who were overlooked in previous drafts to renominate. Players who were previously on a club list can also look to resurrect their careers.
As well as the rookie draft, clubs can now add players to their list if a player is lost due to injury or retirement in preseason.
For example, Carlton would’ve been able to sign a replacement player for Sam Docherty, who would’ve been played on a ‘season-ending’ list.
Round 10 is when the rookie draft is set to commence.
