Goldstein “applauds” North’s pursuit of big-name recruits

North Melbourne ruckman Todd Goldstein has commended the club’s efforts in attempting to secure marquee recruits, despite missing out on several primary targets.

West Coast star Andrew Gaff opted to knock back a multi-million dollar offer from the Kangaroos to remain at the Eagles, after the Roos previously failed in their pursuits of the likes of Dustin Martin, Jordan De Goey, Isaac Heeney and Josh Kelly.

Goldstein says the club are doing the right thing by its fans in wanting to improve their list to the point where they can challenge for a premiership.

“As a player and even as a supporter, all you want is for your football club to be doing absolutely everything they can to make your list better and to try and win a premiership,” Goldstein told SEN Afternoons.

“That’s what we are in the business for and I was shocked with the criticism that the club gets and the jokes that we get for how hard we are going.

“Because that’s all you want – you want to be always trying to improve and that’s what this club is about.”

The Roos ruckman has encouraged the club’s hierarchy to continue chasing top-end talent.

“I look and go: we haven’t been able to land a couple of those big-name players, but we haven’t missed out on them because they haven’t left their clubs,” Goldstein added.

“If they had have done somewhere else then yep, you know what, maybe we did miss out.

“It’s really hard to get the top-line players out of their footy clubs, those top players are hard to get.

“I applaud the club and I hope we keep going harder.”

North have already added Port Adelaide duo Jared Polec and Jasper Pittard during the trade period and look set to secure Gold Coast speedster Aaron Hall.
