Young GWS gun an “exciting” prospect for Blues

Sandringham Dragons’ Talent Manager Ryan O’Connor believes Will Setterfield is an exciting prospect for Carlton, should the Blues recruit the want-away Giant.

O’Connor watched the rise of Setterfield as a junior and has confidence in the 20-year-old’s ability to have an impact at the top level.

“From Carlton’s point of view, you’ve got an inside outside midfielder who can also go forward and be a hard match-up,” O’Connor said on NAB AFL Trade Radio.

“At his best … he could be a very exciting player for them.”

The versatile midfielder made his AFL debut in 2017, playing two matches for GWS before battling a tough run with injury.

“Even though he’s only played a couple of games in his first couple of seasons I know he’s had some very, very good NEAFL form,” O’Connor said.

“I think that probably translates to a more mature body now, after a couple of injuries, still being able to get back in with his level of talent.

“He comes from a very nice family and he’s got a great character so I can see why clubs are lining up for him.”

Setterfield missed the entire 2018 season after suffering an ACL injury in a practice match, but O’Connor doesn’t think his injury trouble should deter future suitors.

“He did have a couple of injury concerns with us but it wasn’t a lot to do with his own doing,” O’Connor said.

“It was probably impact injuries.

“I just think he’s been incredibly unlucky.”

It was reported on Monday that Setterfield has nominated the Blues as his club of choice as he seeks a trade home from GWS.
