Former Sun Michael Barlow says he would be “very shocked” if David Swallow isn’t Gold Coast captain next season.

The Suns’ two co-captains in 2018, Tom Lynch and Steven May, have both departed, but Barlow says the club has a ready-made replacement.

“I know David Swallow is the clear standout from my point of view,” Barlow told SEN’s The Captain’s Run.

“He is a guy, the way he plays when you watch him play, you can really see the attributes he carries and what he provides for that football club.

“He is the driving force behind a lot of things socially, performance wise and training standards, he brings the whole group together.

“He is a stand out for me and I would be very shocked if he wasn’t the Gold Coast captain in 2019.”

Swallow averaged just over 22 disposals per game this season, the second-highest rate of his career.
