Have interstate clubs been given an MCG snub?

Earlier in the year, the AFL decided to lock the Grand Final in at the MCG through to at least 2057 as part of a $500 million mega-deal.

With that change, The Age reported the AFL was considering offering interstate clubs more access to the MCG during the home and away season, but the 2019 fixture doesn’t reflect that.

Teams outside Victoria will play 16 games at the MCG in 2019, up two from 2018 – so effectively, no change.

The Grand Final being locked in at the MCG raised a debate around the footy community as to whether enough was being done to make sure interstate teams weren’t disadvantaged, which is why more MCG access made sense.

However, only GWS, Brisbane and West Coast get an extra game at the home of football in 2019, while Adelaide has lost a match.

The AFL announced as part of the Grand Final deal that non-Victorian clubs would get more chances to train on the MCG during the season, but it appears extra games is not in the equation.
