Rucci’s stern message for David Koch and Port Adelaide

South Australian football journalist Michelangelo Rucci believes the Port Adelaide fanbase does not want the club to go down the path of dual captaincy.

It was reported by SEN SA Breakfast’s own Kane Cornes in January that the Power was set to announce Ollie Wines and Tom Jonas as co-captains, something that goes against club history.

Port has never had co-captains and has a tradition of handing the skipper the number one guernsey. Obviously, that cannot be done with dual leaders.

Rucci attended the club’s 2019 Annual General Meeting and was critical of Port Adelaide chairman David Koch for defending the possibility of co-captains.

“The other key note is the (Port Adelaide) members won’t buy dual captains,” Rucci told SEN SA Breakfast.

“I zipped the lip, but there would’ve been a stage when David Koch went up and brought up the issue of Sydney and its use of dual captains, I would’ve fired back at Koch.

“David, have you looked at the club’s slogan? It says ‘we are Port Adelaide’.

“It doesn’t say ‘we are Sydney’.

“We are Port Adelaide. I looked at other clubs who have been winning premierships recently. We’d all say Hawthorn’s been the most admirable team of our time – one captain.

“Geelong has been the most successful for home-and-away football in our time – one captain.

“I’m not sure this constant belief that spreading that captaincy duties is relevant when you have leadership groups. If they can’t see at this point that their best option is to go with Tom Jonas until Ollie Wines is ready in a couple of years time, then I’m a bit surprised.”
