Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon believes Clayton Oliver may be the Demons’ best ever midfielder.
Oliver kicked a goal and gathered 32 disposals, six marks and six tackles in Melbourne’s 12-point loss to Richmond in Sunday’s JLT Series clash.
Lyon says this kind of performance is characteristic of the Melbourne young gun.
“In my time on this earth, I think Clayton Oliver is Melbourne’s best ever midfielder,” the former Demons skipper told SEN Breakfast.
“Since probably the 70s, I can’t think of a better midfielder.
“He’ll win a Brownlow.
“I’ve said he’s the best of this bunch that’s come through since day one.”
When SEN Breakfast co-host Tim Watson asked whether he was better than a young Gerard Healy, Lyon said he indeed was.
“Better. When Gerard was at Melbourne, 100 per cent,” Lyon said.
“Better than Shane Woewodin”
Oliver is set to feature again in Melbourne’s next JLT clash against Brisbane on Saturday.
The 21-year-old claimed the Sid Anderson Memorial Trophy last year for coming second in Melbourne’s Best and Fairest.
