Fox Footy commentator Cameron Mooney is heartbroken at the situation involving former coach and AFL great Mark ‘Bomber’ Thompson.
Thompson appeared in court on Wednesday on multiple drug charges and revealed he smoked ice during the tumultuous supplements saga at former club Essendon.
Mooney, who won two premierships under Thompson at the Cats, was devastated to learn of his emotional trauma.
“He meant the world to us to be honest. He was the father figure that a lot of us didn’t have around that time,” he told SEN SA’s Dwayne’s World.
“We grew up with this bloke – he took us from boys to men – players to premiership players. We absolutely adore Bomber Thompson.
“It’s heartbreaking to be honest. When I read the transcripts the other day when he was in court – it breaks your heart when you know he was hurting that much.
“We just hope that he can get his life back together because we want to see him at reunions.
“We want to see him, we want to have a beer with him, we want to have a coffee with him, all those types of things that we haven’t been able to do over the last couple of years.”
Thompson, 55, is fighting three drug trafficking charges and four of possession after a raid on his Port Melbourne home last year.
