Tim Watson lists his top six midfielders of 2019

SEN Breakfast hosts Garry Lyon and Tim Watson put themselves in the shoes of the All-Australian selectors to try and pick the best midfield group for this year’s team.

Watson went with (in no particular order): Patrick Dangerfield, Nat Fyfe, Patrick Cripps, Lachie Neale, Marcus Bontempelli and Tim Kelly.

Lyon could only definitively lock in three players, going with Neale, Bontempelli and Cripps.

The AFL greats struggled with the difficult task, but Lyon managed to narrow down which stats mattered most to him.

“They’ll all have 30 possessions,” Lyon said on SEN Breakfast.

“I want to know what they do with them.

“It’s a hard thing because as a midfielder, you’ve got to go back and support in the back half as well.

“There’s no definitive template to say if you tick all these boxes, you will be an All-Australian midfielder.”

Watson believes the selection process should go beyond the stats though.

“Some of these guys influence a game more than others that may have the stats,” he said.

The All-Australian team will be revealed at the end of the home-and-away season.
