Former Sydney and Melbourne coach Paul Roos is a big fan of Essendon’s decision to set up a coaching succession plan.
The Bombers today announced that Ben Rutten will take over as coach of the club in 2021, taking over from John Worsfold.
Roos, who set up succession plans at both the Swans (with John Longmire) and Dees (with Simon Goodwin), said the Bombers are putting themselves in a good long term position.
“For John I think it’s great that he’s come to that conclusion and I think it works really, really well,” Roos told SEN SA’s Dwayne’s World.
“You never really know what a senior coach is going to be like until their feet are under the chair because it’s the pressure of the job that comes with being the head guy, so I think he gets some fantastic learnings next year without the pressure of being the senior coach.
“I think it’s a great idea providing Worsfold is all over it and it sounds like he is. I think it’s a fantastic thing for Essendon.
“I think they’ve identified that they’ve got a good coach and they can now train him up and give him an opportunity that isn’t going to exist anywhere else.”
