Saints add delisted ruckman after Cats renege on rookie commitment

St Kilda has signed former Geelong ruckman Ryan Abbott as a delisted free agent.

Abbott was culled by the Cats last month with a year left on his contract after playing five games in three seasons.

Geelong reneged on their commitment to reselecting the 28-year-old in this month’s rookie draft.

St Kilda list manager James Gallagher says Abbott will further bolster the club’s rock stocks.

“With Rowan (Marshall) and Paddy (Ryder) we believe the ruck position will be a real strength in 2020, but it is an area we have been looking to add depth to,” Gallagher told saints.com.au.

“Signing Ryan provides great cover and bolsters our overall list.

“While he has had limited opportunities at Geelong, he's shown that he is more than capable at AFL level both in the ruck and as a marking option up forward.”

“He is a strong character and we are really looking forward to Ryan joining the club immediately.”

Abott is the sixth player to join St Kilda this off-season.
