St Kilda must embrace King hype: Watson

Essendon great Tim Watson is urging St Kilda to embrace the hype around talented young forward Max King.

The 19-year-old was taken at pick four in the 2018 AFL Draft but is yet to make his senior debut after sustaining an ACL injury playing junior football during his draft year.

There’s always been plenty of fanfare around the tall, who will don club legend Nick Riewoldt’s number 12 when he plays.

After King kicked four goals in St Kilda’s intra-club match on Thursday, Watson says there's no reason not to hide the teenager away from the media spotlight as anticipation about a senior debut continues to build.

“You put him out there,” Watson told SEN Breakfast.

“You don’t have to overhype the kid but you don’t try and hide him away either. If he’s comfortable with it then you allow him to do it.

“This is the choice of players who come into the game, some are happy to do the media stuff and some don’t. To me he looks like a really mature kid who is capable, willing and able to do all of that so why hide him away.

“You’re selling hope and optimism all the time as a football club. That’s always going to be the balance with the coaching staff who may want to hold players back and the club that wants to sell this to the supporters.

“I say you let someone like him go (and embrace the hype).”

St Kilda take on Hawthorn at Moorabbin in the first match of the Marsh Community Series next Thursday, which could see King feature.
