Melbourne are set to name ruckman Max Gawn as its sole captain this week, according to the Herald Sun.
The report states the decision will be made official once it’s been ticked off by the club’s hierarchy and the players are told of the decision.
It would mark a change of on-field leadership for the Demons, who was co-captained by Nathan Jones and Jack Viney last year.
After Melbourne’s 33-point win over Adelaide on Saturday, coach Simon Goodwin confirmed a decision is imminent.
“We’re going to be in a position in a couple of days to share what this is with you guys,” he said post-match.
“It’s something we want to talk through with the playing group, we want to talk through with the leadership of the club and come to a decision in the next few days.”
Viney captained the club in its first Marsh Series match, collecting 25 touches and laying nine tackles.
Melbourne will play a practice match against North Melbourne next week before their final pre-season clash against Hawthorn on March 6.
