Hawthorn’s medical department has given an update on a pair of key players.

Important defender Ben Stratton sustained a hamstring injury in the Hawks’ Qualifying Final loss to Richmond last Thursday night and will miss Friday’s Semi-Final against Melbourne.

However, he could be a chance to return for the Preliminary Final against West Coast if indeed Hawthorn do successfully navigate the Demons in the do-or-die clash at the MCG.

“He’s got a low grade hamstring,” Director of High Performance Andrew Russell told hawthornfc.com.au.

“He definitely won’t play this week, and he’ll be an assess if we get through this week for the following (game).”

Russell also indicated that four-time premiership Hawk Grant Birchall could quite possibly return in Box Hill’s Preliminary Final this weekend with the ambitious view of taking on the Eagles.

“As we know he’s had a few issues adapting to the intensity of skill after missing so much time,” said Russell.

“But he trained today, he did the full session with the boys this morning, and he trained well.

“We need to see how he pulls up, he’ll train again Thursday, and he’s an outside chance to play football this weekend.”

Birchall, 30, hasn’t played since Round 15 of the 2017 season.
