Will GWS be forced to lose a star this trade period?

NAB AFL Trade Radio’s Damian Barrett believes GWS are likely to lose a top quality player after the 2018 season.

Some expensive back-ended contracts could force the Giants to make one or two significant personnel changes this trade period, and there remains plenty of speculation as to what could develop.

“By my reckoning, there’s a million dollars of cap space they need to free up and if you believe some people, it may be even closer to two (million),” Barrett told the NAB AFL Trade Radio podcast.

“That’s a big-name player going out. Dylan Shiel’s the one, who despite being contracted, is being talked about.

“Tom Scully is part of this conversation and even, again being contracted, Harry Himmelberg is part of this overall chat about potentially moving players.

“He (Himmelberg) has had the question asked of him through people around him, ‘is he interested in a move elsewhere?’.

“I don’t know the answer to that question, but clubs are asking the question of him.”

Barrett believes Essendon, in particular, are in the market for a player like Shiel.

“Essendon in my eyes is really keen on Shiel,” he said.

Former Richmond coach Terry Wallace doesn’t believe the Giants can afford to lose Himmelberg but may be more open to allowing a midfielder to depart.

“Himmelberg is really starting to come into his own at the moment,” Wallace said.

“Right now, he’s playing better football than Jeremy Cameron.

“(With Jon) Patton down, they need to keep Himmelberg even if it means losing a midfielder.”
