Lyon and Watson believe Carlton overpaid for Curnow

Former AFL club captains Garry Lyon and Tim Watson agree Carlton have paid overs to keep talented youngster Charlie Curnow at the club until at least the end of 2023.

Curnow inked a fresh extension with the Blues yesterday, something Lyon and Watson both say is a great sign for the club, but reports indicate the 21-year-old is getting paid around $800,000 a year.

Lyon says the financial worth of the deal shows what a great time it is to be a talented youngster in the modern game.

“He has played 37 games, kicked 41 goals and was 10th in the B and F last season,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“It says 3.2 million over four years – 800k each.

“I’m just shaking my head as what a great time to be a great footy player. Of course it’s overs.”

Essendon great Watson believes the high dollar figure comes from the immense potential Curnow has showcased early in his career.

“It’s great news,” he said.

“Of course its overs. You’re paying for his potential.

“Right now it’s about a great story that the Carlton Football Club needed to send and sell out.”
