Cornes and Healy react as Lions and Pies make big selection calls for Easter Thursday

2024-03-27T18:30+11:00

The teams are officially in for the Round 3 clash between Brisbane and Collingwood at the Gabba on Thursday night.

While it is the Grand Final rematch, both teams are in search of their first win of the season with the Lions 0-2 after their Round 2 bye while the reigning premiers Magpies are 0-3.

For the Lions, Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale, Jack Payne and Darcy Fort return for Darcy Gardiner, Jarryd Lyons and Connor McKenna while the Magpies have brought in John Noble and Will Hoskin-Elliott for Oleg Markov and Steele Sidebottom who has been managed.

SEN Sportsday’s Gerard Healy and Kane Cornes reacted to the teams being released on Wednesday night. Check out their thoughts below.

Healy: “There has been a player managed as has been suggested throughout the week. Collingwood have omitted Oleg Markov and Steele Sidebottom has been managed.

“Steele as we all know is at a quiet start to the season, so he's the first one to get managed.

“In comes Will Hoskin-Elliott and John Noble has also come in as we probably all expected.

“For Brisbane, (Jack) Payne, (Lachie) Neale and (Darcy) Fort so two tall and one small.

“Darcy Gardner omitted, Jarryd Lyons has been omitted and Connor McKenna has been injured … so the axe has come out for two.

“Early nominations for that one, who do you think (will win)?"

Cornes: “Brisbane at home, I would think.

“That's the point with Collingwood, what levers do they have to pull?

“Well, not many because there's no real young players beating the door down to get a game.

“You're rehashing the same names like John Noble … Will Hoskin-Elliott … he’s not going to get Pies fans too excited, I wouldn't have thought. It’s nothing really exciting.

“It's what they do with (Nick) Daicos and do they move him positionally and can their best players play?

“That's the only issue with Collingwood because if they don't, there's nowhere else you can go.

“For the Lions, McKenna's a big out just because Keidean Coleman is already out.

“But the two-time Brownlow medallist comes back in to strengthen them up through the midfield.

“I expect you'll get a pretty sharp looking Brisbane outfit.

“But what a game it is."
